Laboratory Experiment 2. Investigating the Effect of Temperature and Acid Concentration on the Rate of Reaction Between Zinc and Hydrochloric Acid

Reagents: zinc, hydrochloric acid with a concentration of 1 mol/dm3 (3.6 %) and with a concentration of 0.1 mol/dm3 (0.36 %).

I. Effect of concentration

1. Place two identical zinc granules in each of two test tubes.

2. Into one test tube, add 1–2 cm3 of acid with a concentration of 1 mol/dm3, and into the other, the same amount of acid with a molar concentration of 0.1 mol/dm3.

3. Compare the intensity of hydrogen evolution.

4. Formulate and write down a conclusion about the effect of acid concentration on the rate of its reaction with zinc.

II. Effect of temperature

1. Slightly warm the test tube in which the gas is evolved slowly. Explain the observed phenomenon.

2. Formulate and write down a conclusion about the effect of temperature on the rate of the reaction.
