The next time you have to speak in front of a group of people, watch their behavior carefully. You will almost certainly notice that many hold one hand to their face and make evaluative gestures. When your presentation comes to an end, you must ask the audience to express their opinions and suggestions. At this point, the evaluative gestures are likely to disappear, giving way to stroking the chin. This is a signal that the listener makes a certain decision.
This person makes a decision. | Female chin stroking |
If you asked the audience what their decision would be, and they began to stroke their chins, you can determine the nature of this decision by the following gestures. It is best to remain calm and carefully observe the crowd. For example, if, having stroked his chin, a person crosses his arms and legs and leans back in his chair, then with a great degree of confidence we can say that his answer will be negative. Orienting in time, you can once again emphasize the merits of your product, service or idea, until the person has uttered a decisive "no", after which it will be much more difficult to reach an agreement.
If, after stroking his chin, a person leans forward, opens his palms, or picks up your samples or other materials, your chances are significantly increased. In this case, it will be easier to reach an agreement.
