The Duke of Edinburgh and other men of the British royal family often walk, lifting their heads, putting their chins and putting their hands behind their backs with their palm on their palm. Such a gesture is characteristic of state leaders, patrol policemen, school principals strolling along the playground, senior officers and senior managers.
This gesture expresses superiority, confidence and imperiousness. Man openly demonstrates his most vulnerable parts of the body: the abdomen, heart, groin and throat, unconsciously expressing his own courage. Our experience shows that by adopting a similar posture in a stressful situation, for example, during an interview or in a dentist's reception, you will immediately feel more confident and even authoritative. The law of cause and effect will come into effect.
Gesture of superiority and confidence - rear and front view Working with the police, we were convinced that the officers who do not have weapons, constantly adopt such a pose, while swaying slightly on their toes, so as to visually increase their height. Armed policemen rarely take this position, preferring to keep their hands down or putting their fingers behind the belt and showing their thumbs up. The weapon gives the officer sufficient authority, and he does not need to underline his position to lay his hands behind his back.
However, people do not always lay their hands behind their back palm on the palm. Sometimes a person wraps the wrist with one hand with the other, as shown in the figure. This is a signal of dissatisfaction and attempts to pull himself together. One hand tightly wraps the wrist or forearm with the other, as if trying to keep it from striking.
The higher the seizure, the more dissatisfied or annoyed your interlocutor. In the following picture, you see that a person struggles to control himself. His mood is much more negative than that of the one in the first image. The man’s arm was wrapped around the other arm above the elbow, not at the wrist. This gesture can be considered as a graphic illustration of the expression “keep yourself in hand”.

Bowing the wrist behind the back | Bowing over the elbow |
A hand behind one's back can often be seen in courtrooms when opponents face to face. So are the sellers who are in the "consumer" zone, and patients awaiting a doctor. This gesture betrays an attempt to overcome nervousness. If such a posture is peculiar to you, try to change the gesture “palm on palm”. You will immediately feel more confident.
