Most recently, we reviewed a whole bale of tools and continuing this topic, I thought that it would not be bad to talk about Alexa.
I would not say that Alexa is a one-of-a-kind service, but they provide one of the best free services. Sometimes it seems that Alexa is lagging behind in development and becomes similar to the old junk, and sometimes it keeps pace with the times.
I recently noticed that they added some great features that are worth paying attention to.
The most popular thing in Alexa has always been their traffic rank . And it is popular because it is always well-known and well advertised.
I have never considered this tool as the most accurate, because such tools for working with traffic always have their mistakes. With all this in mind, you can use Alexa, Google Website Trends / DoubleClick Ad Planner, Compete.com, Quantcast and see the difference between how they will evaluate your website traffic or a certain amount of traffic between several sites, etc.
Despite the fact that I do not believe the numbers in Alexa, some people give them no small importance. Some investors (sponsors) use them. And when Marcus Friend launched the PlentyOfFish project, he redirected users who came from Alexa until the site finally got to his feet.
This is a very wonderful example of how the site is useful and interesting to users. Usually less interesting are sites with topics related to securities, because such sites either sell something immediately or visitors leave them immediately. Also with this tool you can see how much time the user spent on the site.

Of course, pop up will give a greater number of registered users on your site, but we left this technique, because this is at odds with our marketing (our users tend to make a purchase after spending a certain amount of time on it) and therefore users who were sensitive to pop up windows were immediately discarded as buyers.
Where do they merge traffic? Where do their visitors go?
What are the sources of traffic? In many ways, it is not surprising that some sites are rapidly losing popularity with dependence on social networks: the site is suitable for young people or the elderly, what they do offline, does the site need an audience that is difficult to get in social networks, etc.

This shows the percentage of search traffic. If it is incredibly high, this means that the site is completely dependent on search engines and you need to think about finding alternative sources of traffic.
And if it is very low and the link mass of your site is equal to the mass of the competitor, which is ranked higher, then you should analyze the keywords, do not you miss important ones. You can get the same information using Compete.com or SEM Rush.
Is there a community on the site? Is it located on the subdomain and how active are the users. If you have 5-10% of traffic concentrated in closed areas of the site, then this is not a bad result.
This tool allows you to track competitive requests. If you lose positions on the main search queries, it may suggest that you steal content and you should consider hiding some of the content from unregistered users.
If you install the Alexa toolbar, then you will get some additional features in the analysis of search queries.
And also you can get more detailed demographic statistics.
Many sites will have similar statistics, but even such statistics as location can show usage of the site (by a private person or company). Compare the statistics of the site , it will be almost identical:
Visitors to the site are a bit younger (I think that sometimes my cynical nature pushes away the younger generation), a greater number of people who got an education in college and we are a bit more popular among visitors who work for themselves.

There are also sites that have a completely non-target audience. Were such sites for sales, fully covered with intrusive advertising?
Run through the sites in Alexa, you will find sites with the following audience: the old hopeless Americans, who still have low-speed Internet, and ... I do not think that such sites will at least sell something.
I think that the age difference of our audience is almost all ages because we offer free tools that are recommended to the audience ready to buy such products.

more than once people argued with me about the fact that Alex Rang is relevant for Runet. Moreover, they even cited the "type of statistics" of using Alex's toolbar in runet. I repeat - I consider it completely irrelevant for Runet, all because of the method of data collection, just due to the toolbar.
