the most interesting thing is that this check is probably done not only by companies engaged in sending spam, but also by anti-spam companies themselves. for example SOPA
there is a suspicion that it looks for poorly protected servers, and then places them on black lists, and upon repeated listing, only removes them from the list for money. this is confirmed by the fact that Google's gmail servers were placed on the black list
