Practical Work 1. Preparation of Ethylene and Study of Its Properties

Lecture

Objective. Preparation of ethylene and performance of qualitative reactions for the double bond.

Equipment and reagents: a test tube with a gas outlet tube, a rack with test tubes, an alcohol burner, matches, a mixture of ethanol with concentrated sulfuric acid, bromine water, potassium permanganate solution.

Procedure. Place a small amount of dry sand in a test tube fitted with a gas outlet tube (it is needed to ensure even boiling of the contents of the test tube), Practical Work 1. Preparation of Ethylene and Study of Its Propertiesthen the mixture of ethanol and sulfuric acid given to you (approximately 5 cm3). Close the test tube with a stopper fitted with a gas outlet tube, and place its end in a beaker of water. Check the apparatus for airtightness by warming it with your hands. Having made sure the apparatus is airtight, carefully begin heating the mixture of ethanol and sulfuric acid using the alcohol burner. Place the end of the gas outlet tube first in the test tube with bromine water, then in the test tube with potassium permanganate solution. What is observed?

Describe the phenomena observed, and write the corresponding equations and reaction schemes.
