Pour 2–3 cm3 of alkali solution into a test tube, then 1–2 cm3 of copper(II) sulfate solution. A blue precipitate of copper(II) hydroxide forms. Then pour 2–3 cm3 of glucose solution into the test tube. The copper hydroxide precipitate dissolves, and the solution takes on a cornflower-blue color. Heat the contents of the test tube. Observe the appearance of a precipitate in the test tube, first yellow, then brick-red, characteristic of copper(I) oxide.
