Transaction processing systems and knowledge work systems

Lecture

Definition

Transaction processing systems ( Transaction Processing SystemsTPS) — are basic systems that serve the operational execution level in an organization, intended for the automatic performance of a large number of standard operations or transactions.

The goals, tasks, and resources at this level are precisely defined, the data are formalized, and the decisions are structured. Compliance with criteria and templates is exact, the rules are unambiguous, and their execution is associated with minimal risk. The volumes of data processed are large, but the data flows and structure are fully identified and are easily controlled by automated means. Information systems at this level are usually not stand-alone, but are implemented as applications that are integrated, according to certain rules, into the organization's overall IS.

Definition

Knowledge work systems (Knowledge Work SystemsKWS) serve the information needs at the tactical level of providing information for the decision-making process, using heterogeneous, multidisciplinary information of varying degrees of formalization.

The goal of knowledge work systems — is to form «working» knowledge to support the organization's core activities, to find new areas of application for it, and also to obtain additional original knowledge, for example, to form new approaches when assessing non-standard situations. They contribute to the systematization of information, the creation of new knowledge, and its integration into the decision-making process at all levels. The workstations of knowledge work systems are implemented as scientific or engineering automated workstations (AWS) and are also part of the organization's overall IS. Knowledge workers are highly qualified IT specialists with a broad scientific and technical outlook and good professional training. Here are a few examples of well-known software products for forming and managing corporate knowledge:

  • • Microsoft Share Point Portal as a knowledge management tool;
  • • The Excalibur Retrieval Ware knowledge formation and management system of the ASK group of companies;
  • • the eDOCS product line from Hummingbird .
