Depending on the option for how much methodological information a decision support system covers — information used for solving the specific tasks assigned to the DSS — a distinction is made between DSS considered in the narrow and in the broad sense.
Most often the term «decision support system» is used in the narrow sense, when a DSS is understood as a software-and-hardware complex that enables the decision maker, through the capabilities of modern electronic computers for collecting, storing and processing information, on the basis of specific models, algorithms and rules for constructing development scenarios, as well as through the use of various tools, to make well-founded decisions in complex situations. Nevertheless, the need to provide the DM with additional information — primarily methodological information on the specifics of implementing the management processes themselves and on the procedure for developing and making economic decisions, on economic-mathematical methods and tools for decision-making — leads to considering the DSS in the broad sense, when the system also includes this information.
