At present there are various definitions of a DSS. Their diversity is due to which particular aspect of the creation and functioning of a DSS the authors wish to emphasize. In this connection, the following are considered essential for DSS users:
- • the system's provision of informational and computational support for the decision-making process. In this case a DSS is understood as a software-and-hardware complex used for collecting and storing information, systematizing economic-mathematical methods and algorithms for its processing and analysis, as well as tool sets, including visualization tools, that present results in a form convenient for the DM;
- • the use of the system for management over different time horizons. In this case DSSs are distinguished that are used to work out decisions within the framework of strategic, long-term, medium-term and operational management;
- • the personnel using the DSS's services. In this case reference is made to DSSs applied for working out managerial decisions by the middle or top management tier of an organization;
- • the features of the results obtained with the use of a DSS. In this case DSSs are distinguished that are used, for example, for conducting economic analysis.
The goals listed above, the levels in the hierarchy of management systems, the reasons for the creation and functioning of a DSS, the directions and results of its use, as well as the described structure of a DSS as an independent information-analytical system used by the DM for preparing well-founded managerial decisions, determine the following concept of a decision support system.

A decision support system — is an information-analytical complex used by the decision maker to obtain:
- • informational and methodological support for the preparation of a managerial decision;
- • information on the economic-mathematical methods and tools used for processing the source and operational information analyzed in the course of preparing a decision;
- • the results of processing this information into a form convenient for preparing a decision;
- • alternative or final managerial decisions.
