The symbols used for switches and buttons in electrical diagrams vary depending on their type (momentary, latching, multi-position switches, and so on). Here are the main symbols:

1. Single Pole Single Throw Switch (SPST):

  • Symbol: A straight line connecting to a point, with a line running from that point at an angle (the on position). An open line indicates the off position.

2. Single Pole Double Throw Switch (SPDT):

  • Symbol: A single line that can connect to one of two lines (the upper or lower contact). It represents switching between two states (for example, on/off).

3. Double Pole Single Throw Switch (DPST):

  • Symbol: Two parallel lines, each with an angled line that can be closed or open. This symbol is used to control two circuits at the same time.

4. Double Pole Double Throw Switch (DPDT):

  • Symbol: Two lines, each of which can connect to one of two contacts, indicating the ability to switch two circuits between two states.

5. Push Button (Normally Open / Normally Closed):

  • Normally Open (NO):
    • Symbol: Two open lines, symbolizing that the contact closes only when pressed.
  • Normally Closed (NC):
    • Symbol: Two closed lines, which open when pressed.

6. Latching Switch:

  • Symbol: A straight line with a point and a diagonal line, as in a regular switch, but it may include additional markings indicating the latching action (for example, a rectangle)

Multi-Position Switch:

  • Symbol: Several points connected by open lines, each of which can connect to one contact, indicating multiple switch positions.

6. Toggle Switch:

  • Symbol: Similar to a single-pole switch, but it may have an arrow or an additional contact to indicate a rotating or tilting action during switching.

7. Key Switch:

  • Symbol: A switch with an added key or lock symbol next to it, indicating that a physical key is required to change the switch's position.

8. Spring-Return Switch:

  • Symbol: Similar to a standard switch, but with a spring arrow indicating an automatic return to the initial position after release.

This symbol represents a limit switch. It is actuated by the mechanical parts of any machine used in control systems. It is triggered by other objects or machine parts when they come into contact with its actuator.
