Multiply in a column

Lecture

Let's solve an example:

Multiply in a column
  • Write the number of columns (one below the other). In the top line - a larger number, in the bottom - a smaller one.

The rightmost digit (sign) of the upper number must be above the rightmost digit of the lower number. On the side between the numbers we put a sign of the action. We have this "×" (multiplication sign). Multiply in a column
  • First, multiply the entire upper number by the last digit of the lower number. The result is recorded under the line under the rightmost digit.

Multiply the number from the top of the figure (sign) from right to left . 7 · 6 = 42. We get a number greater than or equal to 10.

Therefore, under the line is only the last digit of the result. This is 2. The number of dozens of works (we have 4 dozen) is set above the neighbor to the left of 7. Multiply in a column
  • Multiply 2 by 6. 2 · 6 = 12. Do not forget that it costs 4 over 2. This means that you should add 4. 12 + 4 = 16 to the result of the multiplication (product).

6 write under the line and 1 write over 4. Multiply in a column
  • Multiply 4 by 6. 4 · 6 = 24. To the product we add 1. 24 + 1 = 25. Multiply in a column
  • Go to the multiplication of the number 427 by 3. Multiply by the same rules as 6.
Remember! Multiply in a column

The result of multiplication by the second digit must be recorded under the second digit of the result of the first action of multiplication.

Multiply in a column
  • The resulting numbers under the line add the rules of addition in a column. Multiply in a column

Now, having mastered the multiplication column , you can multiply arbitrarily large numbers.
