Neurosis-like (asthenic) states belong to functional disorders of the nervous system and are characterized by diverse somato-vegetative and emotional disturbances. Neuroses are psychogenic illnesses representing a personality's reaction to psychotrauma (acute/chronic). Neurosis-like states are, in their clinical manifestations, close to neuroses: sleep disturbance, appetite disturbance, disturbance of vegetative regulation; mild affective pathology; asthenic state. However, the cause of their occurrence is protracted somatic illnesses, infections, traumatic brain injury (an endogenous-organic cause). Initial process/mild form: similar to neurosis, but the triggering mechanism is endogenous in nature. The neurotic register is the mildest. The initial stage of schizophrenia's development manifests as neurosis-like symptomatology (the background against which the illness develops). Sluggish (slow-progressing) schizophrenia: 1) neurosis-like (resembling neurosis in complaints and symptoms) — the mildest form; 2) psychopathy-like (behavioral disturbance as in psychopathy). In addition to the neurotic disorders, thinking will be disturbed. A neurotic disorder has adequacy from the standpoint of provoking factors (there was an adequate psychotrauma). Neurosis-like symptomatology may be regarded as a concomitant/isolated phenomenon that remained at the end — upon exiting the illness (residual effects of a somatic illness) — or as prodromal symptomatology, i.e., preceding a somatic illness. Neurosis-like symptomatology + experience = NEUROSIS.
