If the flexibility of the rod is less than the limit value - sun area in fig. 8.3), the Euler formula becomes inapplicable, since the critical stresses exceed the limit of proportionality and Hooke's law is inapplicable. In these cases, the critical stress is determined by empirical formulas obtained on the basis of experiments and given in reference books. One of these formulas is the Yasinsky formula: |
where a, b and c are coefficients depending on the properties of the material. |
For mild steel the coefficients are equal |
where F is the cross-sectional area of the rod. |
For short rods whose flexibility , the calculation of the stability is not produced. Flexibility limit can be found from the condition where - yield strength of the rod material. |
