A characteristic feature of modern science is the rapid growth of the data obtained as a result of research. The total volume of scientific and technical literature currently doubles every 8–10 years. But this is only about one third of all scientific materials. The other two thirds (dissertations, reports, etc.) never reach print, although in many cases such unpublished materials are of no less interest to scientists than published ones.
Specialists are always faced with a difficult problem: how to find what is new and advanced on a question of interest? How to select, from such a mass of information, that which one actually needs? A research worker spends more than a third of their working time establishing what has already been done on the subject of their research.
In order to increase the efficiency of the work of research workers, a scientific and technical information service (STI) has been created, which solves the following tasks:
- the collection and processing of documentary information with the aim of quickly notifying scientists and specialists in the field of science and technology.
- the storage of information in information retrieval systems (IRS), making it possible to carry out a rapid search for the knowledge needed.
- the processing of information in information-logic systems (ILS) to obtain new information.
The STI system includes central and branch institutes of scientific and technical information, and inter-branch and territorial centres and libraries.
The largest information centre on the territory of the former USSR is the Institute for Scientific and Technical Information (VINITI), which processes information from around the world and publishes abstract journals in 20 series covering various branches of knowledge. It contains brief information on publications appearing in 120 countries of the world.
The Ukrainian Institute of Scientific, Technical and Economic Information (UkrINTEI) registers research (NIR) and experimental design work (OKR) and dissertations, and publishes the journal «Naukovo-tekhnichna informatsiya». All organizations in the country, regardless of their departmental subordination, submit to UkrINTEI electronic copies and manuscripts of dissertations, as well as reports on NIR and OKR work, which the institute announces in its information publications.
The Ukrainian Institute of Industrial Property (Ukrpatent) reports on inventions in Ukraine. It is the centre of information on domestic and foreign funds of inventions and discoveries.

The library - has a holding of books, journals, and other published sources of information.
The richest holdings are possessed by:
- the Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine (Kyiv);
- the state scientific institution "Ivan Fedorov Book Chamber of Ukraine" (Kyiv);
- the V. G. Korolenko State Scientific Library (Kharkiv);
- the Central Scientific and Technical Library (Donetsk);
- the largest holding among Ukrainian higher education institutions is possessed by the library of Donetsk State Technical University (DonGTU).
At present, many libraries are creating their own electronic catalogues, access to which is provided through local networks or the Internet.
The archive - stores unpublished documents for a fixed period or indefinitely. In addition to paper documents, there are documents on magnetic media and on photo and cine film.
The museum - shares publicness with the library, and uniqueness of exhibits with the archive.
