1.1 The Subject of Astronomy, Objects of Study.

Astronomy is a natural science that studies celestial bodies, their motion, structure, origin, evolution, and interaction. It plays a key role in understanding the structure of the Universe, as well as in the development of fundamental knowledge about nature.


Astronomy is the science of the Universe, studying the motion, structure, origin, and development of celestial bodies and their systems.
Objects of study: stars, planets, comets, meteors, nebulae, galaxies,
matter located in interstellar space.
Study takes place across different ranges of electromagnetic waves: optical, ultraviolet, X-ray, etc.
Astronomy has three main tasks:
- Studying the apparent and true positions and motion of celestial bodies in
space, determining their sizes and shape.
- Studying the physical structure of celestial bodies, i.e., the chemical composition and physical conditions on the surface and in the interior of celestial bodies.
- Researching the origin and development, and predicting the further fates
of individual celestial bodies and their systems.
Astronomy is very closely interconnected with mathematics, physics, chemistry, philosophy, and biology.
Astronomy acquired its present form only in the 19th-20th centuries. Before that, it inseparably included a number of other branches of knowledge and was more closely tied to
philosophy and theology.

Research methods:

  • Ground-based observatories, telescopes.
  • Space telescopes and probes.
  • Spectroscopy, photometry, radio astronomy.
  • Numerical modeling and data analysis.

Astronomy is taught in schools and universities to form basic knowledge of the Universe and to develop a scientific worldview.

Goals of teaching astronomy:

  1. Broadening students' horizons.
  2. Familiarization with modern achievements of science.
  3. Developing critical thinking through data analysis.
  4. Preparation for studying related disciplines, such as physics and mathematics.

Main topics of the astronomy course:

  • The starry sky and constellations.
  • The Solar System.
  • The laws of Kepler and Newton.
  • The structure and evolution of stars.
  • Galaxies and the Universe as a whole.

Teaching resources:

1.2 Branches of Astronomy.


The multitude of objects and methods in astronomy leads to a large number of branches and separate fields within astronomy.
By the nature of the information used, three main branches are distinguished:
- astrometry,
- celestial mechanics,
- astrophysics.

Astrophysics — investigates the physical properties of celestial objects and phenomena.
Celestial mechanics — studies the motion of bodies under the action of gravity.
Cosmology — considers questions of the origin and evolution of the Universe.
Planetology — investigates planets and their moons.
Solar astronomy — deals with the study of the Sun.
Galactic and extragalactic astronomy — study the structure and evolution of galaxies.


Astrometry studies the position of celestial bodies and the rotation of the Earth, relying
on theoretical and practical methods of measuring angles in the sky, for which positional observations of celestial bodies are organized.
The most important goals of astrometry:
- establishing systems of celestial coordinates,
- obtaining parameters that most fully characterize the regularities
of the Earth's rotation.
Celestial mechanics studies the motion of celestial bodies under the action of gravitation,
develops methods for determining their trajectories based on observed
positions in the sky, makes it possible to calculate tables of their coordinates for future
times (ephemerides), studies the mutual influence of bodies on their motion, and considers the motion and stability of systems of celestial and artificial bodies.
Astrophysics studies the origin (cosmogony), structure, chemical composition,
physical properties, and evolution of individual celestial bodies and systems, up to
the entire Universe as a whole (cosmology).

Conclusions

Astronomy helps not only in studying the Universe, but also in developing fundamental skills, such as logical thinking, the ability to analyze and generalize information. In the school curriculum, astronomy helps increase interest in the natural sciences, and in universities it serves as a foundation for training specialists in the fields of physics, engineering, and astronautics.
