The essence of correctional and pedagogical activity with children and adolescents lies in providing special educational and psychological support to children with various types of developmental and learning disorders. The main goal of this activity is to maximize the development of each child's potential, ensure that his or her individual needs are met, and facilitate integration into society.
The main aspects of the essence of correctional and pedagogical activity:
Individualization of the approach: Every child with special educational needs is unique. Correctional and pedagogical activity is oriented toward developing individualized approaches to each child, taking into account his or her specific needs, abilities, and pace of development.
Development of competencies: Correctional educators help children and adolescents develop various aspects and skills, whether cognitive, social, emotional, or practical. Special attention is given to the areas in which the child experiences difficulties.
Creating a supportive environment: Correctional educators create an educational environment that promotes children's success and engagement. This may include adapted learning materials, special technologies, curricula, and methods.
Working with the family: Correctional and pedagogical activity includes cooperation with the child's parents and family. Specialists help parents understand the specifics of their child's development, provide recommendations, and support them in implementing individualized approaches.
Social adaptation: For many children with special educational needs, social adaptation plays a key role. Correctional educators help develop social skills and teach communication, cooperation, and interaction with others.
Supporting self-esteem: Children with disorders may experience difficulties with self-esteem and self-confidence. Correctional educators help develop a positive attitude toward oneself and teach children to overcome difficulties and achieve success.
Monitoring and adaptation: Correctional educators constantly assess each child's progress and make the necessary adjustments to the educational process. This makes it possible to adapt approaches according to the child's current needs.
In summary, correctional and pedagogical activity is aimed at creating conditions for the comprehensive and full-fledged development of children with special educational needs. It combines knowledge from pedagogy, psychology, medicine, and other fields to ensure optimal instruction and the integration of these children into society.
Correctional and pedagogical activity – is a complex psychophysiological and socio-pedagogical phenomenon that permeates the entire educational process (instruction, upbringing, and development), acting as its subsystem, which includes the object and subject of pedagogical activity, and its target, content, operational-activity, and evaluative-outcome components. Alongside correctional-developmental and correctional-preventive activity, there also exist educational-correctional and correctional-instructional activity, which in their integrative unity together make up the general concept of «correctional and pedagogical activity». Based on the existing view and interpretation of correctional work, it is legitimate to speak of a correctional-pedagogical process as a component part of a unified educational process that includes the instruction, upbringing, and development of the child. Correction, as a special form of psychological and pedagogical influence, is theoretically based on the following fundamental principles:
The essence of correctional activity and its preventive orientation were elucidated by psychologists and psychotherapists S.A. Badmaev, G.V. Burmenskaya, O.A. Karabanova, F.G. Liders, F.S. Spivakovskaya, and others. In their view, correction is a specially organized psychological influence applied to high-risk groups and aimed at the restructuring, reconstruction of those unfavorable psychological new formations that are identified as psychological risk factors, in order to restore the child's harmonious relations with the environment.
From this point of view, correctional and pedagogical activity - is a planned and specially organized pedagogical process, carried out with children and adolescents who have minor deviations in development and behavior, and aimed not only at correcting and reconstructing the individual traits and behavioral shortcomings of minors, but also at creating the necessary conditions for their personal development and adequate integration into society. When correcting behavioral deviations and developmental disorders, it is important to keep in mind that the interaction of the subjects of the pedagogical process has as its ultimate goal the pupils' assimilation of the experience accumulated by society (as a strategic task) and the mastery of positive moral norms and rules, and a culture of behavior
(tactical task).
According to Russian psychologists (L.S. Vygotsky, A.N. Leontiev, D.B. Elkonin), the goal of correctional work should be determined by an understanding of the laws governing the child's mental development as an active, agentive subject of this process, carried out in cooperation with adults in the form of assimilating socio-historical experience through its interiorization - from the Latin for internal - the formation of internal structures of the human psyche through the assimilation of the structures of external social activity. When formulating correctional and pedagogical goals, it must be kept in mind that the goals of correction should:
