The lecture course “Crisis Psychology” is the first attempt in Russian psychology to conceptualize this new branch of psychology. It is significant that the course begins by examining the system of the basic concepts of this new psychological discipline. Applied psychology has for a number of years already been working with people affected by various disasters, and the need for specialists in the psychology of crises continues to grow. Over the past five years, crisis psychology has been taught at universities of the Republic, above all at the Maxim Tank Belarusian State Pedagogical University. The lecture course “Crisis Psychology” includes eleven main sections and five appendices to programs of psychological assistance, in the form of literary illustrations to the main topics, and the booklets «To Help the Affected…». The manual provides the system of basic concepts used in the course and a list of references.

Crisis psychology is a field of psychology concerned with studying and helping people cope with crisis situations and stress. Crises can be caused by various events, such as natural disasters, accidents, the loss of a loved one, trauma, violence, serious illness, and other severe circumstances that can affect a person’s mental and emotional well-being.

Crisis psychologists deal with a number of tasks, including:

  1. Helping to cope with emotional stress: Crisis psychologists help people understand and manage their emotions in a crisis situation, thereby helping them reduce anxiety and fear.

  2. Support in the decision-making process: They can help people analyze the situation and make sound decisions under conditions of stress.

  3. Working with trauma: Crisis psychologists can help those who have experienced traumatic events to recover psychologically and emotionally.

  4. Facilitating conflict resolution: In some cases a crisis may arise out of a conflict or strained relationships, and crisis psychologists can help resolve these conflicts.

  5. Facilitating the process of grief therapy: In the case of the loss of a loved one, crisis psychologists can help with the process of grief therapy and with working through feelings of loss.

  6. Advice on stress management: They provide advice and methods for managing stress in everyday life, as well as under crisis conditions.

It is important to note that crisis psychologists usually undergo special training to work with people in extreme situations and can provide help both individually and in group form. Such support can be critically important for restoring mental health and coping with crises.
