nslookup: command not found — Where to Get It and How to Install It on Linux

Practice

So, you typed something like this at the command line:

$ nslookup mysite.ru
-bash: nslookup: Command not found

"Uhhh..." was about the only reasonable response. And indeed, that's the most fitting reply one can give the system. The thing is, nslookup is part of the so-called "DNS utilities," which, oddly enough, aren't installed out of the box on some Linux distributions.

Well then, let's install it.

Debian, Ubuntu and their kin:
$ sudo apt-get install dnsutils

CentOS, RedHat and their kin:
$ sudo yum install bind-utils
