Debian/Ubuntu: How to Disable the Switch to Winter (Standard) Time

Practice

So, Russia will no longer switch to winter/summer time. However, most operating systems don't know this. Some of it does arrive via updates, of course, but it's still worth playing it safe.

So, in this note I'll show you how to disable the switch to winter time in Debian and its relatives, such as Ubuntu.

You should understand that the winter/summer time transition settings are specified in the timezone set in your OS. So, the easiest way to disable the switch to winter time is to use a timezone where this transition isn't triggered.

To change the timezone in Debian, use the command:

$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure tzdata

In the menu that opens, scroll all the way down, select "Etc", and then choose your offset relative to UTC.

For example, for
  • Yekaterinburg, the offset will be GMT-6
  • Moscow and St. Petersburg, the offset will be GMT-4

And that's it — the switch to winter time will no longer happen on this machine.
