To reduce facial skin pigmentation, whitening creams containing
hydroquinone and its methyl ether are often used.
At the same time, the results of studies on pregnant rats have confirmed
that :
1) embryo mortality rates increase;
2) the incidence of subcutaneous hemorrhages in embryos increases;
3) newborn rats show growth retardation, that is, the
teratogenic and embryotoxic properties of hydroquinone and its derivatives were confirmed
In addition, the use of cosmetic creams with hydroquinone ethers
(1.5-3%) causes leukoderma .
The whitening action of hydroquinone and its derivatives is related to inhibition of skin tyrosinase. As a result, the oxidation processes of
tyrosine and melanin synthesis are disrupted.
It has been established that the use of skin-whitening creams containing 6-
methylcoumarin often leads to photosensitization of the skin. It is believed that
this ingredient should be banned from use in cosmetic
products.
