In the case of rectilinear motion, the displacement vector coincides with the corresponding part of the trajectory. From the fact that displacement is a vector, the law of independence of motions that is confirmed by experience follows: if a material point participates in several movements, then the resulting displacement of a point is equal to the vector sum of its displacements, which it accomplishes separately in each of the movements.
