When promoting any website, especially news portals, it is very important to know which queries are more popular than others, and which queries are currently trending worldwide or in a specific country.
One such service is Google Trends.
With Google Trends you can gather the following information:
The most important tool in Google Trends that you need to work with is, of course, the keyword.
When you land on the main page https://www.google.ru/trends/ we see the popular queries for that day in front of us.
If you need to view popular queries for a specific category, simply select the category you need from the "All categories" list. You can also view the popular queries for that day for a specific country.
But to get more detailed data, you need to enter the specific query you're interested in the "Topics" field. For example, "laptop".
From the chart we see that over the last 10 years the popularity of this query has grown a great deal. And if we check the "Forecast" box, we'll see that the worldwide trend for this query will keep growing. But that's the trend for the whole world. Since you usually need to find out the trendiness for a particular country, instead of "Worldwide" you need to select a specific country. Let's select "Ukraine".
As we can see from the chart, the situation in Ukraine is worse than the global trend. And the forecast says that this trend will continue in the near future. And by scrolling the page down further, we can view the popularity of the query by region.
And by scrolling further down, we can view related queries.
Of course, in Google Trends, as in most other Google analytics services, you can perform a comparative analysis of several queries at once.
To do this, enter the desired query for comparison in the "Add query" field. For example, "Tablet".
As we can see from the chart, the trend for the query "tablet" is much better than for "laptop". And that's not surprising. Based on the global trend, people are increasingly choosing compact tablets, which are much more convenient to carry around anywhere. This means the number of queries related to tablets (for example, how to download to a tablet; how to install on a tablet; games for a tablet, etc.) has grown.
And if you run a news portal, then in addition to the standard Google Trends functionality that we already covered above, "Trending Searches" would also be a good fit. This page shows the queries that Google users have started actively searching for in the last few hours. For example, at the time this article was written, people in Russia were actively asking what holiday Russia celebrates on November 4th.
Of course, in Google Trends you can compare and analyze not only queries related to goods or services. You can also compare, for example, the popularity of famous people. For instance, Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Barack Obama.
The most interesting thing is that in 2015 the American president was searched for the most in Kenya and Panama.
