SEO checklist – 5. Visual extras and multimedia content — All SEO factors affecting page ranking in search results (part 5)

Lecture

Let's put together a single table listing all the factors that affect your site's ranking in Google, Yandex, Bing, Yahoo!, Baidu, Mail.ru and other search engines. The list includes positive, negative and neutral factors affecting ranking.

Look through this Seo Checklist, compare the items against your own site, fix the problems and make the most of the opportunities wherever you can. Success in SEO is achieved not simply by following a checklist, but by outperforming your competitors; you need to make sure you've met at least most of these requirements and recommendations.

Even though ranking algorithms and signals keep changing and new signals keep appearing, the existing signals mostly remain in the set of signals taken into account when ranking, with only minor changes. Signals relating to a site's internal content are the main and classic ones, since the most important thing on any site is its content, and whether the site is made for people (MfP), rather than being yet another junk site.

Don't forget the single most important thing: you're making the site for PEOPLE, not for search engines, so first and foremost the content or service on the site must be unique, and only secondarily should the site follow SEO rules.

The tag shows in the search results as the page title. The title tag should be short (6 or 7 words maximum) and the keyword should be placed right at the start. for key pages it matched the site name (with the page title, highlighted, for example, by that page's tag, it should read: “Site name” — “Contacts” or simply “Contacts”;

but it's better to use link rel="alternate"and

Cutts recommends that webmasters host language versions of sites on separate domains (for example, domainname.com, domainname.ru, domainname.fr, etc.). First, Matt Cutts states that it's easier for a search engine to properly evaluate content that sits on a separate domain and has a regional binding. Second, users in each individual country trust sites in their own domain zone more, since they perceive a company with such a site as a local business rather than something distant and unreachable. If your budget doesn't allow you to buy separate domains in different domain zones, Cutts advises at least creating subdomains for each language version of the site.

Also, if a site on an international domain zone (for example, .com) is created for the audience of a specific country, this regional binding should be specified in Google Webmasters.

Seo Checklist - Part - 5. Visual extras, multimedia content and SEO

5.1

JavaScript

Used sensibly, this won't hurt you. But if your main content is rendered through JavaScript, this makes it harder for search engines to index, to follow, and if the JavaScript code is complex the spiders can't follow it, which will certainly hurt your ranking.

5.2

Text in an image

Having a text-only site is so boring, but having lots of images plus text is not an SEO sin. Always give the alt attribute a meaningful description of the image, but don't stuff it with keywords or irrelevant information.

5.3

Podcasts and video

Podcasts and video are becoming more and more popular, but as with all non-text information, search engines can't read (recognise) them, so if you don't have a tapescript of the podcast or video, it's as if the podcast or film doesn't exist, because it won't be indexed by search engines.

5.4

Images instead of text links

Using images instead of text links is bad, especially if you don't fill in the tag. But even if you fill in the alt attribute, it's not the same as having a bold, underlined, 16-pt link, so only use images for navigation if it's genuinely important to your site's graphic layout.

Frames SEO checklist – 5. Visual extras and multimedia content — All SEO factors affecting page ranking in search results (part 5)

Frames are very, very bad for SEO. Avoid using them, and only use them if it's genuinely necessary.

For correct ranking of a document it's not recommended to use the iframe tag, since, for example, the Yandex search robot does not index documents loaded into it.

5.6

Flash adobe flash, microsoft silverlight, microsoft ActiveX

Spiders index the content of Flash animations and other interactive elements poorly, so if you use Flash on your site, don't forget to give it an alternative text description. all the more so since browsers stopped supporting Flash from 2020

24. Image optimisation. In the image files placed on a web page, search engines look for additional important relevance signals. They read the file name, the values of the img tag's alt and title attributes, the description, and the image caption.

37. Multimedia. Images, video and other multimedia elements can serve as a content-quality signal.

152. Images. Google supplements organic results with image search results if a query is regularly used in Google Image Search.
