  • Thalamus (optic thalamus) - a subcortical structure formed by two large groups of nuclei located on both sides of the 3rd ventricle and connected to each other by the gray commissure. The thalamus serves as a kind of distributor for information from receptors, which it integrates, interprets, and then relays to the brain.
  • Temporal - relating to the temple/temporal region.
  • Thermal map - time slices of the brain's metabolic activity obtained by means of thermoencephaloscopy.
  • Thermoencephaloscopy - a method of measuring local brain metabolism by means of a thermal imager.
  • Thermal imager - a device that registers thermal radiation.
  • Testosterone - the biologically most potent of the natural androgens (male sex hormones).
  • Theta rhythm - one of the components of the spectrum of EEG rhythms, having a frequency in the range of 4.0 to 7.0 Hz and an amplitude in the range of 5 to 100 µV.
  • Thymus - the thymus gland - an endocrine gland located in humans in the thoracic cavity and participating in the regulation of growth, mineral metabolism, and the formation of specific immunity.
  • Thyroxine - a thyroid gland hormone containing iodine.
  • Fine motor skills - the ability to use the capabilities of the hands and fingers to perform precise movements of small amplitude.
  • Tonic - slowly progressing.
  • Topical - local.
  • Topographic - taking into account the mutual arrangement of parts and organs of the body.
  • Thoracic - relating to the thoracic cavity.
  • Inhibition - a nervous process opposite to excitation; manifested in the weakening or cessation of activity specific to a given system of the organism.
  • Inhibitory neurons - a type of interneuron whose axons form nerve endings on the bodies and dendrites of excitatory cells, in which an inhibitory mediator is produced. The nerve impulses that arise upon excitation of inhibitory neurons do not differ from ordinary action potentials, but the mediator released at the endings of their axons causes not depolarization but hyperpolarization of the postsynaptic membrane of the next neuron, which prevents the development of an action potential on its membrane.
  • Inhibitory postsynaptic potential - see Postsynaptic potential.
  • Tropic hormones - pituitary hormones that control the level of activity of other endocrine glands; for example, adrenocorticotropic hormone controls the level of activity of the adrenal glands, gonadotropic hormones control the level of activity of the sex glands.
  • Trophism - the totality of processes underlying cellular nutrition and ensuring the preservation of the structure and function of tissues and an organ.
