  • Naloxone - a substance that blocks opiate receptors.
  • Narcolepsy - a disease characterized by brief, difficult-to-overcome attacks of drowsiness and loss of muscle tone.
  • Lateral geniculate body - a nuclear formation within the thalamus, involved in the processing of visual information; it performs the function of relaying and integrating visual stimuli.
  • Mismatch negativity - a component of evoked or event-related potentials, characterizing the processes of involuntary attention.
  • Neocortex - new areas of the cortex, which in lower mammals are only outlined, and in humans make up the main part of the cortex
  • Non-invasive - without penetration, not disturbing bodily integrity.
  • Neuro... - the first component of compound words, indicating their relation to the nervous system.
  • Neuron - the basic structural and functional unit of the nervous system. The neuron receives signals from receptors and other neurons, processes them, and transmits them in the form of nerve impulses to effector nerve endings.
  • Neurobiology - a field of biology studying the laws governing the functioning of the nervous system.
  • Neurogenic - owing its origin to the nervous system.
  • Neurohypophysis - the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland.
  • Neuroglia - the totality of all cellular elements of nervous tissue, apart from the neurons, performing supportive, protective and trophic (nutritive) functions.
  • Neuropsychology - a branch of psychology studying the cerebral and neural mechanisms of higher mental functions and their relation to individual systems of the brain.
  • Neuromediators - special substances performing the function of transmitting information between neurons.
  • Neurometrics - a diagnostic system based on indicators of the bioelectric activity of the brain.
  • Gnostic neurons - neurons that perform the function of integrating information coming from detector neurons; they are presumed to be responsible for the formation of images of objects. Gnostic neurons are located in the associative zones of the cortex of the cerebral hemispheres.
  • Detector neurons - specialized nerve cells capable of selectively responding to a particular feature of a sensory signal.
  • Command neurons - neurons that trigger specific motor acts.
  • "Motor program" neurons - groups of neurons whose activation precedes the execution of various fragments of a complex motor pattern.
  • Novelty neurons - neurons that are activated by the action of new stimuli and reduce their activity as habituation to them develops.
  • "Expectancy" neurons - neurons that respond to tonic motivational arousal.
  • "Search behavior" neurons - neurons that are activated during the orienting-exploratory activity of the animal.
  • Place (environment) neurons - neurons that are selectively excited when the animal is in a certain part of the space of the cage.
  • "Identity" neurons - neurons that are activated by the action of familiar stimuli. Target-movement neurons - neurons that are activated by any variant of approach to a target. Goal neurons - neurons that selectively respond to the appearance of a target object (for example, food or a sexual partner). Neural network - a group of interacting nerve cells or its model.
  • Neural models of memory and learning - models of plastic neural networks aimed at studying their ability to form memory traces and retrieve recorded information. Neural efficiency - the high speed and accuracy of information processing in the nervous system, providing optimal conditions for productive cognitive activity.
  • Neuro-ontogenesis - genetically programmed structural and functional transformations in the nervous system from the moment the organism originates until its death.
  • Neuropil - a mesh of thin axons and dendrites; contains a large number of synapses.
  • Neurosecretion - the release into the blood, from a cluster of nerve cells, of special substances (neurosecretions) that have a regulatory effect on the functioning of various systems of the organism.
  • Neurophysiology - a branch of physiology whose object of study is the nervous system.
  • Neuroendocrine - conditioned by the interaction of the nervous and endocrine systems.
  • Neocortex - the phylogenetically most recent, higher regions of the brain.
  • Nerve - a bundle of nerve fibers that conducts nerve impulses from receptors to the CNS or from the CNS to effectors.
  • Nerve impulse - an action potential propagating along a nerve fiber as a result of changes in the ionic conductivity of its membrane under the influence of stimulation.
  • Neural model of the stimulus - an engram created by the nervous system, storing information about all the specific characteristics of the stimulus. The action of a new stimulus causes a mismatch with the existing neural model of the stimulus, which leads to the emergence of an orienting reaction. The theory of the neural model of the stimulus was developed by E. N. Sokolov.
  • Nervous system - the totality of nervous formations in the body of humans and vertebrate animals. Its main functions: ensuring contacts with the external world; integrating the internal organs into systems, coordinating and regulating their activity; organizing the integral functioning of the organism.
  • Nerve ganglion - a cluster of nerve cells, inside which the branchings of nerve fibers are located in the form of neuropil.
  • Nystagmus - rapid and frequent involuntary movements of the eyes in various directions, caused by periodic contractions of the corresponding oculomotor muscles.
  • Noradrenaline - a hormone close to adrenaline, secreted by the adrenal medulla; noradrenaline also plays the role of a mediator.
  • Nosology - the study of diseases and their classification.
  • Noci(re)ceptor(s) - specialized structures, evolutionarily adapted for the perception of painful stimuli.
  • Nociceptive sensitivity - sensitivity to harmful, destructive influences.
  • Nuclear - relating to the nucleus.
