Climate is the aggregate of long-term weather conditions characteristic of a particular territory. However, within a single macroclimate there can exist smaller climatic units that form under the influence of relief, vegetation, water bodies, and anthropogenic factors. These units — local climate, microclimate, and phytoclimate — play an important role in ecology, agriculture, urban planning, and medicine.
Local climate is the climate characteristic of a particular type of terrain within a broader climatic zone.
It forms under the influence of relief, water bodies, soil cover, and vegetation.
It differs from the regional climate in its average values of temperature, humidity, wind, and precipitation.
Examples: the climate of a river floodplain, a forest tract, a mountain gorge, a steppe plain.
Example: in the Carpathians, the local climate of mountain valleys differs from that of the peaks — it is warmer, more humid, and less windy below.
Microclimate is the climatic conditions in a very limited area (from a few square meters to a few hectares).
It depends on local factors: shading, soil type, presence of structures, vegetation.
It can differ substantially from the surrounding climate even within a single site.
It is important for architecture, landscape design, agriculture, and medicine.
Example: the microclimate inside a greenhouse differs from the outside environment — higher temperature, higher humidity, less wind.
Phytoclimate is the microclimate of the habitat of plants, especially in the surface layer of air and the upper layer of soil.
It includes:
Air temperature at a height of 5–50 cm.
Soil and air humidity.
Illumination, wind speed, carbon dioxide.
It affects the growth, development, yield, and resilience of plants.
It forms under the influence of the structure of the vegetation cover, planting density, and plant species.
Example: in a dense forest, the phytoclimate differs from that of an open field — less light, higher humidity, more stable temperature.
