Musical Thinking

Lecture

Musical thinking — is a special form of artistic consciousness that unites the emotional and rational perception of music, allowing a person not only to listen but also to think in musical images.

🎼 The Essence of Musical Thinking

  • Definition: Musical thinking — is a person's ability to perceive, analyze, and create music as a system of intonation-imagery structures.

  • Cultural aspect: It is regarded as part of artistic consciousness, shaping musical culture and aesthetic perception.

  • Psychological aspect: Includes the interaction of sensory-intuitive and conceptual-logical components.

🧩 The Structure of Musical Thinking

Component Characteristic Example
Emotional-intuitive Based on feelings, associations, intonations Perceiving a melody as «joyful» or «sad»
Rational-logical Analysis of form, harmony, rhythm Determining the key, the structure of a sonata
Creative-heuristic Creating new musical ideas Improvisation at the piano
Communicative Music as a language of communication Playing music together in an ensemble

Patterns of Development

  • The dialectical nature of music: a combination of opposites — emotion and logic, tradition and innovation.

  • An intonational foundation: music is thought through intonation, which carries meaning and emotion.

  • Assimilation of other types of thinking: musical thinking borrows elements of imaginative, logical, and even mathematical thinking.

Didactic Foundations of Formation

  • The principle of imagery: learning is built on developing the ability to see artistic images behind sounds.

  • The principle of integration: combining theory and practice — analyzing musical works and performing them.

  • The principle of creativity: developing improvisation and composing music as a way of active thinking.

  • The principle of dialogue: music as a means of communication between student and teacher, performer and listener.

Development of Musical Thinking

According to research by M.I. Makhmutov, the problem situations that can be created in educational activities may include the following.
1. When students encounter contradictory life phenomena and facts that require explanation.
2. When performing practical work and assignments.
3. When interest is awakened in comparing, juxtaposing, and contrasting different facts.
4. When performing research assignments
.
In artistic creativity, solving problem situations is linked to finding the greatest expressiveness and originality of the image being created by the artist. The search proceeds by trying out the widest variety
of means available in each art form — intonation, makeup, plasticity, rhythm, composition, proportion, color. Thought works in the direction of bringing real actions as close as possible to the image created by the imagination. Preliminary sketches, drafts, and variant solutions for the artistic image being created — are a common practice among many artists. In them, thought finds the form that best corresponds to the content being expressed.
In art, thinking manifests itself in the form of an artistic image, through which feeling and thought are conveyed. Therefore, to develop nonverbal artistic thinking, the following exercises can be recommended.

In the Field of Fine Arts

Convey and express an image carrying states of sadness, joy, calm, and anger:
— using only lines;
— using only colors;
— in an abstract drawing;
— in a ritual mask — warlike and carnival-style;
— searching for paintings that express one and the same artistic image;
— creating a collage that expresses a particular image.

In the Field of Choreography

Perform the same tasks and convey feelings using:
— pantomime;
— facial expression;
— sculptural compositions;
— posture and gait;
- free dance.

Depict, in several variations of pose, the archetypes of the Hero, the Mother, the Child, the Old Man.

In the Field of Music

Express the same feelings:
— through intonations of the voice while reading abstract poems;
— express, through intonations and rhythms, various types of motivation — defense, furious attack, ardent striving, triumphant jubilation;
- find the expression of the same feelings in various musical works;

In the Field of Verbal, i.e., Literary, Creativity

In the field of verbal, i.e., literary, creativity, assignments for developing creative thinking might include the following:
— make 10—20 metaphorical comparisons of emotional states using the words «like», «as if», «akin to». Example: «My sorrow
is like a stone on my chest», «My righteous anger is akin to sacred fire»;
- describe in words the content of paintings and musical works, using the language of metaphor and association;
- create verbal portraits of your friends and acquaintances;
- compare artistic works that differ in style and
find distinguishing features in them. For example, the differences between the style
of composers of the Viennese classical school (Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven) and
the style of Romantic composers (Tchaikovsky, Brahms);
— find the expression of analogous artistic images in the paintings of artists from different stylistic movements. For example, among Impressionists and Realists;
- come up with your own titles for stories by famous writers. Here,
the stories of Chekhov, Shukshin, and Paustovsky work well;
- a game between two teams on the theme «Because». It is based on— inventing the consequences of events. For example: «The boy Vitya did not go to
school yesterday. He did not go because he had a competition. And the competition took place because a selection of young athletes was being held for the
city games. And the selection was held because there were very many people wanting to take part, and so on.»;

‒ «Riddle Questions and Answers».- If stars are lit, then
does someone need it?
Possible answers:
- sailors need it, so they can find their way home. Or:
- migratory birds need it, as they fly to warm lands. — And
if I were a migratory bird, where would you fly? – I would fly
to where «the scent of roses converses with the singing of birds of paradise… and so on.
- inventing different endings for jokes and fables.

The Significance of Musical Thinking

  • For the individual: it develops the emotional sphere, imagination, and the capacity for abstract thinking.

  • For culture: it forms musical tradition and ensures continuity between generations.

  • For education: it is the foundation of music pedagogy and performing art.

Conclusion: Musical thinking — is not merely the ability to understand music, but a universal way of knowing the world through sound images. It unites emotion and reason, tradition and innovation, making music a powerful tool for shaping personality and culture.
