The triptych «The Informal Family» (La familia informal, 1992) [ 79 ] by the artist Herman Braun-Vega, held in the permanent collection of the Ralli Museum in Marbella , explores the theme of the informal economy. [ 80 ] Created as part of a series of sixteen paintings on syncretism and mestizaje (racial and cultural mixing) for a retrospective exhibition in Madrid in 1992 during the celebration of the quincentenary of the «Encounter of Two Worlds», this triptych links the informal economy in developing countries – defined by the artist as «an economic system connected with survival, autonomous from the state and avoiding taxation» – with reflections on mestizaje and social integration. Inspired by the architectural structure of Velázquez's « Las Meninas », Braun-Vega depicts «popular characters from the informal economy» alongside members of his family and figures from art and literature, making up what he calls «the informal family». [ 81 ] The work was used in an educational programme of France's Ministry of Education, Culture and the Francophonie during the 1994–1995 academic year, where it was presented in thirteen schools as teaching material on questions of subsistence economy and cultural exchange between peoples. [ 82 ]
