An infocommunication system is a combination of technical, software and organizational means that provide for the collection, transmission, processing and storage of information using telecommunication and information technologies. It brings together two key areas:
Information technology (IT) — the processing, storage and presentation of data.
Telecommunications — the transmission of data over a distance by means of various communication channels.
In other words, an infocommunication system is the infrastructure that allows people, organizations and devices to exchange information in digital form.
Infocommunication technologies - this concept brings together two components: information technologies and telecommunication technologies.
These components can be characterized as follows:
The concept of "infocommunication technologies" covers information technologies (hardware and software), telecommunication equipment (subscriber and network equipment) and telecommunication services (services in public telephone networks, services on the Internet, mobile telephone services, etc.)
In the past, telecommunication and information technologies developed separately and, in essence, independently of each other. The provision of telecommunication services was inseparably linked with organizations known as telecom operators, which built their business on selling voice traffic. Information technologies, for their part, developed on their own and were associated with software development.
An information and telecommunication network is a technological system intended for transmitting information over communication lines, access to which is obtained by means of computing equipment
An infocommunication system is a combination of a telecommunication network, facilities for storing and processing information, and the sources and consumers of that information.
Multiservice networks are a universal transport medium for carrying data, corporate telephony traffic and all multimedia systems.
(including videoconferencing, video surveillance and distance learning systems)
Multiservice networks also make it possible to transmit information of various kinds within a corporate network using a single infrastructure.
NGN (next generation networks) are multiservice communication networks whose core consists of IP backbone networks that support the full or partial integration of voice, data and multimedia services.
An infocommunication system comprises several interrelated components:
| Component | Description |
|---|---|
| Hardware | Servers, routers, switches, mobile devices, etc. |
| Software | Operating systems, databases, CRM, ERP, cloud platforms |
| Communication channels | Fiber-optic lines, mobile networks, satellite communication, Wi-Fi |
| Services | Email, videoconferencing, cloud storage, instant messengers |
| Organizational processes | Regulations, standards, security protocols, access management |

This model of an infocommunication system was proposed by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
Infocommunication systems perform a wide range of tasks:
Providing communication between users and organizations
Decision support based on data analysis
Protecting information against unauthorized access
Integrating various platforms and services
Improving the efficiency of business processes
Infocommunication systems play a key role in a wide variety of industries:
Business: process automation, e-commerce, remote work
Medicine: telemedicine, electronic patient records, remote diagnostics
Education: distance learning, digital libraries, online courses
Public administration: electronic services, digital registers, monitoring systems
Transport and logistics: GPS navigation, traffic flow management, cargo tracking
As technology advances, infocommunication systems are becoming ever more intelligent and integrated. The key trends are:
The transition to 5G and 6G networks
Large-scale adoption of cloud solutions
The use of artificial intelligence and machine learning
Stronger cybersecurity
The growth of the Internet of Things (IoT)
