unexpectedly learned fact, while bewilderment arises when we are presented as fact with something that, in our view, is not the case.
Example (282) shows that оказывается can be used in the context of free indirect discourse: the narrator transfers his rights to the egocentric element to a character – the people in the hospital. These are the people in the hospital who взволновал визит преподобного [were stirred by the reverend's visit] and who unexpectedly learned that в наших краях есть священники [there are priests in our parts] (NB the first-person pronoun наши [our]):
(282) Визит преподобного взволновал всю больницу. Оказывается, в наших краях есть священники! И они исповедуют желающих! В самой большой палате больничной <…> говорили только об исповеди тети Поли [В. Шаламов. Колымские рассказы (1954–1961)]
Here the interpretation of оказывается is direct (the fact that priests are present is not disputed), but the presumed subject of the propositional attitude is not the speaker, but the character.
