where tp – contact overheating temperature per the technical specification at maximum current load, per the technical specification tp = 10…30 ºC;

tamb – ambient temperature, ºC;

KN – electrical current load factor.

The values of the coefficient accounting for the effect of the number of contacts used N on connector reliability can be calculated as

5. Models for Predicting the Operational Reliability of Domestically Produced Components (5.16)

The values of the coefficient accounting for the effect of the number of mating–unmating cycles n on connector reliability are calculated using the model

where top – operating temperature of the radio-frequency connector, ºC. The temperature top is determined as [11, 12]

top = tamb + 5, ºC, (5.19)

where tamb – ambient temperature, ºC.

5.9. Alphanumeric Display Indicators

The values of coefficient KR for semiconductor indicators are determined using model (5.8), in exactly the same way as for infrared-range emitting diodes.

The values of coefficient Kt for vacuum fluorescent indicators with a green phosphor can be calculated using the formula

Kt = exp[0.00923(tamb – 25)], (5.20)

where tamb – ambient temperature, ºC.

For other phosphor colors Kt is taken as equal to unity [10–12].

The temperature tm is determined as

tm = tamb + tp, (5.22)

where tamb – ambient temperature, ºC; tp – overheating temperature, ºC.

The values of tp for a supply mains frequency f = 50 Hz are calculated using the formula

tp 0.25tp.TU (3Kn2 1) , (5.23)

for f > 50 Hz:

tp 0.5tp.TU (Kn2 1), (5.24)

where tp.TU – maximum overheating temperature per the technical specification, ºC;

KN – electrical power load factor of the transformer. For power transformers of RES: tmax = 85 ºC; tp.TU ≈ 55 ºC.

5.11. Other Elements and Components

Chokes, inductors. The values of coefficient KR can be approximately calculated using the mathematical model:

The values of coefficient KF depending on the number of relay switchings per hour F when operating as part of RED can be determined as

KF = 0.1 at F ≤ 1, KF = F/10 at F > 1. (5.27)

The values of coefficient KK, accounting for the effect of the number of contacts used N on relay reliability (for non-hermetic relays):

KK = 0.42 + 0.24N. (5.28)

The value (BL) and coefficient KR(L) are determined as for chokes.

Piezoelectric devices. Averaged values of coefficient Kt can be calculated using the model

Kt exp[0.017(tamb 25)], (5.29)

where tamb – ambient temperature, ºC.

Fuses, connections, multilayer boards with metallized through-holes. The values of coefficient Kt are calculated using the model

Kt = 0.061tamb – 0.525, (5.30)

where tamb – ambient temperature, ºC.

Cables, cords, wiring conductors. The averaged value of coefficient Kt is determined using the mathematical model:

5. Models for Predicting the Operational Reliability of Domestically Produced Components 5. Models for Predicting the Operational Reliability of Domestically Produced Components (5.31)

where E – coefficient determined by the insulation material of the cable product, can be taken as [11, 12]: 4570 – for wiring conductors; 9862 – for radio-frequency cables, conductors; 11233 – for power cords;

top – operating temperature, ºC.

The temperature top is made up of two components:

top = tamb + tp, (5.32)

where tp – overheating caused by the electrical or electromagnetic energy dissipated in the cable (conductor).

tamb – ambient temperature;

The values of tp for power cords and wiring conductors can be found as

tp (tmax 25)KN2 , (5.33)

where tmax – maximum operating temperature of the cord, conductor per the technical specification, ºC; KN – electrical load factor.

Coefficient KN is determined as the ratio

KN = j/jmax, (5.34)

where j – operating current density in the conductor, jmax – maximum permissible current density per the technical specification.

In the absence of sufficient data, the current density jmax can be taken as equal to 3.5 A/mm2 [17].

The condition top ≤ tmax must be satisfied. Otherwise the value of KN must be reduced.

The values of the maximum operating temperature tmax for cable products of general-purpose RED are selected from Table 5.20.

5.12. Values of Coefficient KE

Table 5.21 presents a classification of ground equipment groups depending on operating conditions, compiled by the authors of this textbook with reference to reliability handbooks and standards of Russia, the USA and China [10–13, 15]. It also indicates the approximate correspondence of the identified groups to the Russian military standard and the US reliability handbook. For comparison of ground equipment with equipment of other categories, Table 5.21 also gives (the last two rows) a characterization of operating conditions, and further on the values of KE are given for airborne, in particular aircraft, equipment.

5.13. Values of the coefficient KP

The acceptance factor KP takes into account the following types of acceptance of elements under production conditions:

  • acceptance “1” – acceptance by the enterprise quality control department (QCD): mass-application elements;
  • acceptance “3” – acceptance by the enterprise quality control department (QCD):

elements produced to order for ministries and agencies;

  • acceptance “5” – general military application (OVP, VP);
  • acceptance “7” – elements of special stability produced in small batches (OSM);
  • acceptance “9” – elements of special stability and enhanced reliability (OS);
  • commercial or unknown quality level.

Averaged values of the coefficient KP depending on the type of acceptance of elements of various classes and groups are given in Table 5.23. For elements with acceptance “5” the value of KP is taken as 1. For other types of acceptance, approximate (extrapolated) values of KP were determined from the data in

[10–13, 15, 16].
