In a rapidly changing world, new threats to humanity are emerging that make the study of safety issues increasingly urgent. The main focus of the psychology of safety is not the specific aspects of particular types of activity (complex chemical production, rescue operations, road traffic, etc.), but rather the identification of general patterns of human activity under conditions of danger, where the human factor plays a decisive role — and without accounting for its specifics in the professional training of a specialist, the outcome can be catastrophic for the whole of humanity.
In recent scientific literature, the problems of state security, occupational safety, safety of enterprises, organizations, the environment, aviation, and other issues are increasingly addressed. Russian psychologists have achieved the greatest results in matters of occupational safety. Of particular interest are the works of V. A. Bodrov, M. A. Kotik, E. A. Klimov, and K. K. Platonov. One of the best Russian textbooks on occupational safety is M. A. Kotik's "Psychology and Safety" (1987). However, time does not stand still, and new social realities require a rethinking of well-established facts.
In the professional training of specialists, in addition to knowledge of safety regulations, it is necessary to form a worldview and an ideology of safety, and to cultivate stress resistance — everything that underlies the skillful use of methods and means of protection that ensure human safety. This book pays special attention to the analysis of various factors that influence the formation of a personality that is safe both for oneself and for others. The analysis of socio-psychological problem situations and recommendations for ensuring human safety are also of considerable importance.
This textbook examines safety issues in an accessible form from the following perspectives: socio-psychological problems of individual safety in society; psychological characteristics of a person that are important for relatively safe behavior, deviant behavior, and ensuring safety; occupational safety and professional risks; and psychological features of human behavior in socially problematic situations.
The textbook has a clear structure: at the beginning of each chapter a brief summary of the topics to be discussed is given, and at the end the main conclusions and review questions are formulated, along with recommended literature for further study; a glossary is placed at the end.
