philosopher Cicero contrasted tyrannical and democratic states. In doing so, he also drew a distinction between coastal and continental cities. He portrayed the inhabitants of the former as more mobile and liberal, and the citizens of the latter as conservative and settled.
In the USSR, geopolitics was long (until the late 1980s) considered a pseudoscience. The Great Soviet Encyclopedia defines geopolitics as "a bourgeois, reactionary concept that uses distortedly interpreted data from physical and economic geography to justify and propagandize the aggressive policy of imperialist states." Among contemporary scholars who deny its scientific status, one can note S. V. Utekhin, A. B. Zubov, E. M. Shulman, and others.
In the bulletin "In Defense of Science," published by the Commission against Pseudoscience and Falsification of Scientific Research under the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences, in issue No. 19 of 2017, in an article by A. G. Sergeev titled "The Synecdoche of Response, or Homeopathic Defense" (p. 90), geopolitics is mentioned by the author as a pseudoscience.
