The locus of points whose ratio of distances from a fixed point ( focus ) to distance to a fixed line ( directrix ) is constant and equal to the number e ( eccentricity ) is a second order curve . If e <1 then this is an ellipse , if e = 1 then this is a parabola , if e > 1, then this is a hyperbola .
