4.7. Installing WINDOWS NT

Lecture

The installation is designed to resolve issues in the sequence below.

1. The choice of the file system used. If you are installing Windows NT Server, you should decide on the choice of domain model or workgroup model. During installation, you need to clarify the role played by the machine running Windows NT Server: primary or backup domain controller, file server, printer, or application server.

2. Formation of a set of necessary protocols installed by default. If you select the Express Setup installation type, you can install other protocols later.

3. Preparation of the set password.

4. Select the type of network card used, the type of disk adapter, the sound card configuration.

5. Determining the type and model of the printer and the port of its connection with the simultaneous installation of Windows NT and printer drivers.

6. Testing equipment for serviceability with the help of diagnostic tests.

7. Check compatibility of all computer devices with Wndows NT

During the installation of the Windows NT system, the installation program asks for the installation parameters required for installation on the hard disk, and then copies the files used, creates and displays the start menu on the screen.

Installing Windows NT can be:

initial, if no computer has previously installed any system or the existing OS needs to be completely replaced;

updated when Windows NT is installed on top of the previous version while preserving the existing OS. At the same time, all existing Windows NT files are replaced and the registry settings are saved, the data of which are related to the download of applications and security identifiers.

The installation of Windows NT begins with the launch of the winntexe utility, which is a 16-bit application running in a DOS environment, Windows NT, etc. In the case of an update, a 32-bit version of this file is launched - winnt32.exe.

There are several ways to install Windows NT:

from an HCL-compatible CD-ROM using bootable discs;

• a CD if an OS exists without using bootable discs;

• a drive that is available on the local computer network.

If the CD-ROM is an HCL-compatible device, then the installation of Windows NT is carried out using bootable diskettes.

When the computer has a previously installed OS, and the CD-ROM is not an HCL-compatible device, the contents of the corresponding folder are copied to the hard disk. Using the key, the installer copies files from any media other than boot disks to the hard disk. These files will be launched after restarting the computer.

With the support of a network card and Windows NT network protocols, it is possible to start the installation program without using additional keys. Files and distribution directories can be located on a CD-ROM or server hard disk. If the network card or protocol is not supported by Wndows NT, then the entire distribution directory should be copied to the hard disk of the computer.

If any of the operating systems have not been previously installed on the computer, you can create a boot disk for the user using the Windows NT Server Client Administrator Utility. This disk initiates DOS boot, and it becomes possible to copy distribution files to disk.
