The main idea of Saussure was the idea that language is the idea of pure relationships. According to Elmslev - a combination of mathematics and linguistics. He tried to build a language algebra. For a linguist, only the relationship between language signs is important. If you identify all the relationships, the language can be represented as a system of these relationships. The goal is not in the division of units, but in establishing the dependence of some units on others.
Three types of relationships :
1. Interdependence - when one unit assumes the existence of another.
2. Relations of determination - one member presupposes the existence of another, and the other does not presuppose.
3. Constellation - none of the members assumes the existence of another.
The goal is to identify and register relationships within the language.
