Idle - the mode of operation of a device, usually a source of mechanical or electrical energy, with the load disconnected.
In the technique of idling is used in the case when it is impossible for any reason to turn off the engine without the need for energy transfer. This is usually due to the fact that the internal combustion engines used can deliver the necessary power only when a certain minimum number of revolutions is reached. To disconnect the load, the engine is disconnected from the consumer using special mechanical devices. For example, in automobiles, a clutch is designed for this, in automatic transmissions, communication takes place through a torque converter, in machines, various friction clutches can be used.
In electronics, the concept of idling is understood as the voltage between the terminals of a circuit with an infinitely large resistance between them (open circuit).
Applies to energy sources or devices that have an output that connects to other elements of the system. In particular, the no-load voltage of the current source is one of its main parameters (along with the impedance). Also the no-load voltage is widely used in the calculations of electrical circuits, for example, in the theory of two-port networks.
Processor idle is programmed in many assembly languages with the NOP command.
