Here we have an example of power transmission over long distances, showing the value of using high voltages. The generator on the left produces 120 V, and a step-up transformer converts it to about 113 kilovolts. This greatly reduces the current and therefore the resistive losses in the transmission wires (represented by the 500 Ω resistors). A step-down transformer lowers the voltage to about 114 V for the load on the right. The graph in the lower left corner shows the power delivered to the load. For comparison, the same setup without transformers is shown at the bottom. The resistive losses are much higher, and the power delivered (shown in the lower right corner) is much lower. (Although the power delivered by the source is also much lower; but if you compare the power supplied by the source with the power consumed by the load, the circuit at the top is much more efficient than the circuit at the bottom.)
