This circuit shows a voltage operating from an AC voltage. The colors indicate the power consumed; red means the component is delivering energy, and green means the component is delivering energy. The left part of the circuit represents the power company's side, and the right part represents a factory (with a large induction motor). A highly inductive load makes the power company work much harder. The graph on the left shows the power lost in the power company's equipment (the resistor at the top left). The graph in the middle of the setup shows the power delivered to the factory. The graph on the right is the power supplied to the inductor. Even though a peak power of 40 mW reaches the factory, 200 mW is dissipated in the power company's wires. This can happen when the power factor is less than 1, and power companies usually apply an extra charge when this occurs.
