Online demonstration of the permanent-magnet synchronous motor (pmsm) circuit

A permanent-magnet synchronous motor (PMSM). The excitation is provided by permanent magnets on the rotor, so there is no field winding, no slip rings and no excitation losses — the motor is compact and highly efficient. It runs exactly in step with the stator field, whose speed is set by the supply frequency. A line-start version carries a starting (damper) cage that runs it up to synchronism; a drive-fed version has no cage and cannot start from a fixed frequency — an inverter controls it. PMSMs are widely used in electric vehicles, servo drives, pumps and appliances. The model shows the torque M, the speed n and whether it is in synchronism.

Using the model. Close the three switches to apply power — the starting cage runs the motor up and it pulls into step with the field. Use the "supply frequency" slider to set the speed: in a PMSM it follows the frequency rigidly (emulating a VFD). The "supply voltage" slider limits the inrush and the "load torque" slider sets the load; too much load knocks the motor out of step. The scopes show the line voltage U(L1‑L2) and the phase current I(L1).
